The Sci Fi convention is now! The first went well, but there is still the second.
My participation, as well as my first experience as a stage manager, was with two acrobatic shows.
It is a type of show that could be original, in a second life where almost everything has now been seen. On the other hand, my personal challenge is precisely to propose things that may not be perfect, but that are original. So in my shows you won’t see the best costumes on the marketplace: they will be less perfect, but I modeled them mesh myself, one by one. My animations will certainly not be the best mocaps found in the best stores in the world, but it doesn’t matter, I prefer to be the ones I designed, frame by frame. My stages will be less colorful and with less furniture than those of the others, but that’s okay, I prefer to use the meshes that I model. Obviously I collaborate with some people, who give me a hand in and out of Secondlife, but only to build original material.
Starting from existing tools for artistic performances, such as dances and theater shows, and adding a good dose of scripting as I like to do, I have combined tools like MST and protocols like LockGuard, and through scripts I am trying to build aerial dances in secondlife, but I will talk about the techniques used in a future post.
For Sci Fi Convention 2021, I proposed two original works, both for three dancers.
The first, entitled “Nordic Dream in the Space”, with music by a well-known Northern European heavy metal band. It is a setup that wants to tell a story: a space crew makes an interstellar journey, but a sudden failure inside the spaceship produces the effect of reducing gravity and lowering the temperature. A Nordic dream begins, towards cold areas, which must be heated with fire. An aerial dance experiment with effects of lights and flames, with the collaboration of Alex, an “old school” builder who is back among us in times of lockdown.
The second is “From Alps to Space”, and this time no Nordic heavy metal bands, but I chose a touch of patriotism using a piece by my Swiss compatriots Fferlyt. This is the story of a space crew who lands on a planet with a particularly electric atmosphere, in full compliance with Coulomb’s Law and Maxwell’s equations, but does not realize that they have landed while a battle is underway between two spaceships. Here too the lighting effects are by Alex, while the background images are original by his daughter.
Naturally, thanks also go to Ambra, Marusya, Sherry and Valerie, who always support and encourage me from Italy, Bulgaria, Texas and France. Thanks also to the two exceptional dancers, who were the protagonists of the two performances: Abby Rose and Kim Bieler. We are a close-knit staff, and the next step (not in Sci-fi con) will be another bet: using music played for us by a real musician, and not the usual mp3s taken from the net.

La Sci Fi convention è iniziata!! La prima è andata bene, ma c’è ancora la seconda.
La mia partecipazione, oltre che come prima esperienza da stage manager, è stata con due shows acrobatici.
E’ un tipo di spettacolo che potrebbe essere originale, in una secondlife dove oramai si è visto tutto o quasi. D’altra parte, la mia sfida personale è proprio quella di proporre cose che potrebbero non essere perfette, ma che siano originali. Quindi nei miei spettacoli non si vedranno i migliori costumi presenti sul marketplace: saranno meno perfetti, ma li ho modellati mesh io di persona, uno ad uno. Le mie animazioni non saranno di sicuro le migliori mocap trovate nei migliori store in world, ma fa nulla, preferisco siano quelle che ho disegnato io, frame dopo frame. I miei stages saranno meno colorati e con meno arredi di quelli degli altri, ma va bene lo stesso, preferisco usare le mesh che modello io. Ovviamente collaboro con alcune persone, che mi danno una mano dentro e fuori Secondlife, ma solo per costruire materiale originale.
Partendo da strumenti già esistenti per le performance artistiche, quali danze e show teatrali, ed aggiungendo una buona dose di scripting come piace fare a me, ho combinato strumenti come MST e protocolli come LockGuard, e tramite script sto provando a costruire delle danze aeree in secondlife, ma delle tecniche usate parlerò in un prossimo post.
Per Sci Fi Convention 2021, ho proposto due lavori originali, entrambi per tre ballerine.
Il primo, intitolato “Nordic Dream in the Space”, con musiche di una nota band heavy metal nord-europea. E’ un setup che vuole raccontare una storia: un equipaggio spaziale compie un viaggio interstellare, ma un guasto improvviso all’interno dell’astronave produce l’effetto di ridurre la gravità e abbassare la temperatura. Inizia un sogno nordico, verso zone fredde, che vanno riscaldate con il fuoco. Un esperimento di danza aerea con effeti di luci e fiamme, con la collaborazione di Alex, un builder “old school” che in tempi di lockdown è tornato tra noi.
Il secondo è “From Alps to Space”, e stavolta niente band heavy metal nordiche, ma ho scelto un tocco di patriottismo usando un pezzo dei miei connazionali svizzeri Fferlyt. Questa è la storia di un equipaggio spaziale che atterra su un pianeta dall’atmosfera particolarmente elettrica, nel pieno rispetto della Legge di Coulomb e delle equazioni di Maxwell, ma non si accorge di essere atterrato mentre è in corso una battaglia tra due astronavi. Anche qui gli effetti di luce sono di Alex, mentre le immagini di sfondo sono originali di sua figlia.
Un grazie va naturalmente anche ad Ambra, Marusya, Sherry e Valerie, che dall’Italia, dalla Bulgaria, dal Texas e dalla Francia mi supportano e mi incoraggiano sempre. Un grazie anche alle due ballerine d’eccezione, che sono state le protagoniste delle due performance: Abby Rose e Kim Bieler. Siamo uno staff affiatato, ed il prossimo passo (non in Sci-fi con) sarà un’altra scommessa: usare musiche suonate per noi da una musicista vera, e non i soliti mp3 presi dalla rete.
